US Defense Secretary James “Mad Dog” Mattis has stated that US officials are still assessing intelligence regarding an alleged chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Mattis’s statements mark a departure from the line of US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and Donald Trump who have both concluded that there was a chemical weapons attack and that the Syrian Arab Army is somehow responsible for it.
When asked about the incident Mattis replied,
“We’re still assessing the intelligence – ourselves and our allies. We’re still working on this”.
Russia and Syria have called for the OPCW to conduct a full, independent investigation. OPCW investigators are said to be heading to the scene after the organisation agreed to investigate the incident.
